Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC) / Multi-Currency

Give international cardholders the option to complete credit card purchases in their home currency at the time of sale with Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC). With DCC, your merchants are able to offer their international customers a higher service level, often resulting in increased customer loyalty and repeat business.

Cardholders no longer have to wait to receive their credit card statements to understand their foreign transaction charges—they know instantly at the time of purchase what the total charge amount will be in their own currency, eliminating all confusion regarding conversion amounts.

How DCC works

Visa and MasterCard credit cards issued in currencies other than U.S. dollars are identified at the point of sale (POS) by comparing the card prefix against a table of bank identification numbers and their corresponding billing currencies.

Once the cardholder’s home currency is established, the POS device obtains the foreign exchange rate and converted currency transaction amount. Cardholders are given the option to complete the transaction real-time in their home currency or in U.S. dollars with the conversion applied at a later time by the card brands and the card issuer.

If the cardholder elects dynamic currency conversion, the transaction is authorized and completed in the cardholder’s home currency. The customer receipt is printed with the transaction amount and foreign exchange (FX) rate applied, as well as the original amount in U.S. dollars. The transaction amount printed on the receipt is the same as the amount that is reflected on the cardholder’s billing statement.
