PCI Compliance: Change is Coming. We’re Ready to Help.

Changes in the Industry Require Merchant Action by July 1, 2010.

There are multiple initiatives and programs required by the industry and TSYS to update your merchants, their equipment, terminals and software. Those Initiatives and Programs are:

Is Your Terminal Compliant?

On July 1, 2010 the following devices, to name only a few, will no longer be compliant and can put you at risk for financial penalties.

  • Hypercom S7 PIN Pad
  • Hypercom S8 PIN Pad
  • Hypercom T7+
  • Nurit 2085
  • Nurit 8000 Wireless
  • Nurit 8320
  • Verifone 2000 PIN Pad
  • Verifone Omni 3740
  • Verifone Omni 3750

On July 1, 2010, these terminals may no longer be considered compliant. PEP will ensure your Verifone Vx510, Vx510LE or 1000SE is compliant.

  • Verifone 1000SE
  • Verifone Vx510
  • Verifone Vx510LE

Hardware Compliance Options

Based upon what equipment the merchant currently uses, there are options available to reach the compliance goal:

  • Replace the entire unit with a compliant device
Example: Upgrade from a Talento to a Vx510LE
  • Add an external PIN pad to the existing device
Example: Add a compliant Verifone 1000SE PIN pad to an Omni 3740/3750
  • Replace existing non-compliant external PIN pad with a compliant PIN pad
Example: Exchange a Verifone 1000 PIN pad for a compliant Verifone 1000SE PIN pad

How PEP Works

  1. TSYS and Acquirer work together to identify merchants at risk
  2. Acquirer decides on upgrade offering to their merchant base
  3. TSYS conducts outbound call campaign to verify what equipment the merchant has and offers appropriate options
  4. Merchant chooses an option
  5. TSYS makes necessary changes to front-end system (s) and/or terminal systems
  6. TSYS initiates equipment exchange or deployment, if necessary
  7. TSYS makes follow up phone call and conducts training, if necessary

General Compliance

In an ever changing terminal based world, there are many merchants who are using POS devices that may limit their interchange qualification ability or may put you at risk as in the case of merchant receipt truncation. Upgrading to the newest TSYS Acquiring Solutions Class A applications that support the recent enhancements will enable your merchants to be compliant with operational and interchange mandates, including support for cardholder and merchant receipt truncation, ALPC, and American Express® Card Acceptance Processing Network split dial.

PCI PED Compliance

Clients/Merchants need to be aware that older devices predating the Visa PED standard will need to be pulled out of service by July 2010.

  • Effective July 1, 2010, all transactions originating at point of sale PIN encryption devices must encrypt PINs using TDES keys from the point of transaction to the issuer (end to end)
  • The card brands also mandate that as of July 1, 2010, all PIN entry devices must be tested to the current PCI PED security standards by PCI recognized laboratories, and certified by the card brands.

Brand Acceptance

Discover has changed their business model to allow other Financial Institutions to acquire / process Discover Merchants directly. This transfer of control of the merchant relationship to the Acquirer* provides a revenue opportunity for both parties. The goal of the Discover Merchant Acceptance Program (MAP) is to add Discover to the existing Acquirer merchants currently not accepting today. By increasing the acceptance population it also allows for the acceptance of JCB and Diners Club International.A portfolio with full Discover acceptance increases the revenue opportunity and prevents other acquirer from owning your merchant’s Discover processing.
